Sensei Taneguchi was crying all day. She has chosen to quit teaching. I am a little worried that William was in the last class she WANTED to teach...
I loved how they all marched in.
I was told by my student, Ryota, that you practice for this 4 times in your life. How you accept the graduation certificate is a ritual that you practice for kindergarten graduation, jr. high graduation, high school graduation and college graduation. When I forget the word for graduation, I just mimic this, and people understand. You take it, and hold it up high...
This bow and position is important...
And hold it up again.
He takes it to another sensei, who rolls it up and puts it in this cool tube with Seika's inscription on it.
They hold it high, all the way back to their seats.
This pic is a bit backlit, but there is a procession to it.
Captain Weed, the guy who runs our base, spoke at the ceremony. William calls him 'our friend' because they always say, "Our friend from base, Captain Weed." This has led to some confusion by some, when his name comes up, and William claims a close friendship.
Then, they gave their last band performance.
Encho Sensei gives them a personal gift. Our pansy is in our garden now.
Encho Sensei is the daughter of the first Japanese Admiral on this base after WWII. He helped start this school with the help of the Americans. She speaks very good english, and would always take special interest in William.
He is shaking his teacher's hand. Sensei Taneguchi is still crying.
This is what it looks like! If you can read it, it says William Jaakko Putaansuu in Japanese.
Here's his yearbook photo! I think this is so cute! Kindergarten memories!
