About 2 hours drive away is Lake Ashinoko. A caldera lake, it's a beautiful place. You head up out of Odawara, and go towards Hakone. A friend had found these cabins that are about $200 night. You share with 1 other family, so it's affordable.
I stayed home. I've been up here 4 times. So, I wrapped presents, didn't have anyone fighting me for the TV, watched movies. Life was good!
Part of the fun is having a campfire. What's unique is that there are all these fire pits in one area of this cabin place. Doerrs, Johnsons, Murphys, Mansons, Anthonys, Sullivans, Hudsons and Tim and William went.
William is standing to the left of the fire.
Cough cough, choke choke... smoke follows beauty....
Hikes through the woods, seeing different types of wilderness here in Japan.
This is Owadakuni. They are eating black eggs.
The black eggs, cooked in the hot onsen pools, are dark because of the sulfur. They are said to extend your life by 7 years. But, don't eat too many, or you'll smell like you're really old...
William said eating the black eggs were his favorite part of the trip.
There are many steam vents here.
You do get a nice view of Mt. Fuji.
Smells funky, trust me.
This is where they're cooking the eggs.
Tim is parent of record (we use this code for who the authorities will be talking to if our kid gets hurt).
You can take a gondola down, or walk.
Don't get lost!
They have boats to do little excursions on the lake.
Stefan and William having fun on the 'cannon.'
The torii gate from the water.
You can see what the cabins looked like.
Beautiful cabins in the woods. Ah... And I got a vacation, too! I think it'll be a boy vacation every year!
