Nakezumo April 2010

Around the end of April, at Askakusa, is Nakezumo. I love going here. Between the shrine, temple, other sites, there is this main walking area with TONS of great shopping! Best place to get souvenirs. Go a few streets to the side, and you'll get more bargains.
Hallie and Ian. It was an exceptionally nice day.
You can see the new communications tower they are building. It has just passed Tokyo Tower for being the tallest structure.
The place wasn't as crowded, and the pagoda looked awesome. BTW, those are fake flowers!
Asakusa is great, because you occasionally see weddings here. I ran to get this pic! That hat is covering the woman's horns, so the groom won't know about them until after he marries her. Isn't that what a veil is for, as well?
Of course, I love people and their dogs the best. But, women with 2 kids on a bike is fun, and bonus points if both are crashed out sleeping. Too funny!
We are in the back of the crowd. The babies are given to sumo wrestlers, who try to make them cry, as crying indicates a strong baby.
Not all of the babies would cry, but the priests would put masks on and scare them a bit.
We tried to get Ian in. The baby has to have been born within the last year. You need to go to the Asakusa web site early enough to find the number to call, and get the form to register IN ADVANCE. It said, "Registration time" and I took it that you could register that day. Nope. Gotta write in and make the cut. In addition, it's about ¥10,000 ($110.00 USD)
The wait list was 10 long, and they told us we wouldn't make it. DARN! I made a happy coat for him to wear! Gotta represent!
At least he got to watch it with us.
Finally, he bonked his head, and we got some real crying action out of him! He got so much attention that day from everyone.
Nake is cry, sumo becomes zumo after that e vowel. Ta's become da's, ka's become ga's, and su's become zu's. Japanese lesson for the day. :)
